Yellowbud Hickory Harvest and Education event!

October 16 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Keystone Tree Crops Cooperative is teaming up with the PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry for a free yellowbud hickory harvest and education event, and we would love to see you there.

Friday, October 16, 1 to 3 pm
Reading Public Museum, 500 Museum Rd, Reading, PA 19611 (specifically at this location, 40° 19′ 39.6″ N and 75° 56′ 59.7″ W)
Rain date: Friday, October 23

We will gather at the tall hickory tree on the museum’s corner of Parkside Drive North and Museum Road. Robbie Coville, the Bureau of Forestry’s Agroforestry Specialist, will talk about agroforestry and the potential nut trees have in our food system and in forest stewardship. Erica Lavdanski, KTCC’s Processing Manager, will introduce yellowbud hickories and explain why their oil is considered like an olive oil from our northeast forests.

You will also have time to connect with the local tree crops community and learn how to identify the trees and harvest good quality nuts. Crack and taste some black walnuts, sample Pennsylvanian hickory oil pressed in Berks County, or try gathering yellowbud hickory nuts yourself.

A few practical notes:

  • Please bring water for yourself. If you want to harvest nuts, we encourage you to bring buckets or bulb crates for that. We will have supplies to share too.
  • This event will take place at the tall hickory tree on Reading Public Museum’s corner of Parkside Drive North and Museum Road (here is a map link https://maps.app.goo.gl/ud2wga4jsAz7TEBL6, here are coordinates 40°19’39.6″N 75°56’59.7″W).
  • Children are welcome, though the event is designed for adults.
  • Bathrooms are available in the museum.
  • Parking is available at the Reading Public Museum, a few minutes paved walk away. There is also street parking in the area, or you could get dropped off nearby on Parkside Drive North.

There is no fee to participate. RSVPs are requested, but walk-ins are welcome.

Please RSVP here: https://events.humanitix.com/ktccharvest5 This helps us in a few ways, and then we can notify you if we’re rescheduling due to weather.

If you are curious about foraging for KTCC, read their Yellowbud Hickory Harvester’s Handbook (https://ktcc.coop/handbook). KTCC is buying yellowbud hickory nuts from members and non-members. You can find more gathering events and KTCC’s current nut purchasing prices at ktcc.coop/harvest.

We hope to see you under the hickory!
