Regional Project Benefiting Berks

Pennsylvania Saffron received $116,807 for an AI-powered weeding system serving farms in Berks, Lehigh, and Northampton counties.

Why It Matters

We know that the current and future success of agriculture is tied to innovation. These grants support projects that:

  • Increase farm productivity and operational efficiency.
  • Reduce food waste and nutrient loss.
  • Advance sustainable agriculture practices.
  • Promote renewable energy and resource conservation.
  • Strengthen local and regional agricultural supply chains.

Bigger Picture

The Agricultural Innovation Grant Program was launched in 2024 and has become highly competitive, with demand far exceeding available funding. Pennsylvania has allocated $10 million for the program in the 2026-27 state budget, signaling continued support for agricultural technology and innovation across the Commonwealth.

Bottom line

These funding awards position Berks County as a significant beneficiary of Pennsylvania's agricultural modernization efforts, supporting projects ranging from dairy automation and organic farming technology to food-waste reduction and controlled-environment agriculture. Berks County is the only county in Pennsylvania that has a County Department of Agriculture. That speaks volumes to our commitment to supporting this vital industry! #GrowingBerks
